First story: Rupert and the Sleeping Village followed by four other stories - Rupert and the Little Train,Rupert and Algy's Misadventure, Rupert and Podgy's Christmas and Rupert and the Metal Horse (this last story has never appeared in a Rupert Annual before.) This annual was the last one in which the "Follow Rupert" artwork appeared, and also the last Rupert annual to be illustrated by John Harrold. Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional for a book of it's age and its nature, i.e. a child's book, and particulalrly internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the single interior fault described that prevents the highest grading.Nevertheless,it really still is an exceptional copy for brightness and cleanliness. John Harrold took over the illustrating of the Rupert character as Alex CUBIE had retired, and who'd illustrated the previous annuals from 1974 until 1978.John Harrold was born in Glasgow, 1947,and studied art there at the Glasgow School of Art situated in the Charles Rennie Mackintosh building. His first job as a Rupert illustrator was on 'Fun to Cook with Rupert' (drawn in 1973,published 1974).The editor,Frederick Chaplain was impressed and invited him to work for the Daily Express. His first story,Rupert and the Worried Elves, began on 14 October 1976,and in the same year he produced games pages for the annuals.Up to now (2007),he has been illustrating the little bear's adventures for longer than Mary Tourtel, and those children who were brought up on his first adventures are now mature adults.
